Born in Michoacán, México and with a musical upbringing in the San Francisco Bay Area, Alex Rosales García has woven his life as a bassoonist in the diverse tapestry of Los Angeles. An active presence in both California and Nevada's music scene, Alex has shared stages alongside orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Royal Ballet, Las Vegas Philharmonic, Los Angeles Opera, Pacific Symphony, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, WildUP and more. While in college, Alex held principal position with the Debut Orchestra from 2013 to 2016 and was acting Principal Bassoon with Southeast Symphony. In 2015, Alex was appointed Second Bassoon/Acting Principal with Las Vegas Philharmonic. Beyond orchestral realms, he can be heard in various film, television, album, and Broadway productions including Ahsoka, Encanto, West Side Story (2021), Into the Woods, Jennifer Hudson and more. He has also shared the stage with various Latin American artists like Silvana Estrada, Omara Portuondo, Carlos Vives, Café Tacvba, and Oscar D’León.
Alongside the other members of his quintet, Cardinal Winds, Alex was awarded the Grand Prize at the 2015 Plowman Chamber Music Competition, achieved recognition as semi-finalist in the Fischoff Chamber Competition, and finalists at the Coleman Chamber Competition. His musical engagements reach into underserved communities, where he co-founded Together in Music (TIM), a Latin-American chamber music ensemble dedicated to aiding communities in Venezuela. TIM has since received accolades from the Center for Cultural Innovation and the Sphinx Organization. In 2020, Alex joined Syrinx Quintet, which stands as LA's pioneering reed quintet, enriching Southern California's chamber music landscape with innovative and inventive musical selections. In 2023, Syrinx Quintet won the Beverly Hills Nationals Competition and was invited to perform at the 2024 International Double Reed Society conference.
A passionate educator, Alex holds positions as bassoon professor at California State University Long Beach, and East Los Angeles College. Alex maintains a thriving bassoon studio, aiding students who have achieved positions in local youth orchestras and secured scholarships to esteemed music institutions. Additionally, he has contributed his expertise to the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 'El Sistema' program – Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) for over a decade.
Alex's academic journey is marked by a double Bachelor's degree in Political Science: American Government and Music: Bassoon Performance from the University of California, Irvine. At UC Irvine, he studied under the guidance of Pacific Symphony bassoonist Elliott Moreau. Alex received his Master of Music in Bassoon Performance from the University of Southern California’s Flora L. Thornton School of Music, mentored by Los Angeles Philharmonic bassoonist, Shawn Mouser.
Amid his musical pursuits, Alex wholeheartedly embraces personal passions. He not only engages in amateur Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitions but also finds solace in hiking and salsa dancing.
